Our Connect Class on April 7 at The Branch was a practical and encouraging night focused on helping people take real steps toward financial health.
We were led by Morgan Wiseman, Financial Wellness Specialist at First Financial Bank, who guided attendees through the basics of banking, budgeting, and managing debt with clarity and simplicity.
Understanding the Basics: Morgan began by explaining how financial institutions work. She walked through the core services that many people use every day, including checking and savings accounts, loans, and investment options. She also helped distinguish between secured and unsecured debt, giving people a better understanding of how borrowing works and what impacts interest rates.
Budgeting That Works: A key part of the night focused on budgeting and breaking down the misconceptions that often surround it. Budgeting is not meant to restrict your life but to give you direction and control. Morgan introduced several methods, including the 50-30-20 approach, which provides a simple framework for managing income by dividing it between needs, wants, and savings or debt. This gave attendees a clear and practical way to get started.
Facing Debt with a Plan: The conversation around debt was both honest and helpful. Morgan shared that the average American household carries significant debt, and she introduced the concept of the debt to income ratio as a way to measure financial health. She also offered a simple repayment strategy by rolling payments from one paid off debt into the next, helping people build momentum over time.
A Clear Path Forward: Rather than leaving people overwhelmed, Morgan provided a clear order of priorities. Start by building an emergency fund, take advantage of employer matched retirement contributions, and focus on paying off high interest debt while continuing to save. This step by step approach helped remove confusion and gave people confidence in what to do next.
Building Financial Stability: The night closed with a focus on saving and why it matters. Saving creates stability, reduces stress, and helps prepare for both expected and unexpected expenses. Morgan shared practical ways to save more consistently, including evaluating spending habits and making small, intentional changes that add up over time.
A Step in the Right Direction: This Connect Class was about helping people move forward with confidence. It provided simple tools and practical guidance for anyone looking to take control of their finances and build a healthier future.
